AGA Golf Fitness Tip of the Month | April | Scottsdale | Mesa | Arizona

This is Andrew Fodge with Fitness by Andrew Personal Training based out of Scottsdale, AZ, with locations in Scottsdale and Mesa. I am a TPI Certified Trainer. With me today is Adam and we are going to demonstrate some strength training exercises with a cable system for both the upper and lower body. You can find these cable machines everywhere, so we will show you what we can do to improve your strength and golf swing safely and effectively. Our 1st exercise is a “Pulling” exercise. We want the cable set up in the low position close to the knees. Get into golf posture, with a single arm, and no rotation, pull to the ribs, extend, pull, and reach out. 5 to 10 reps on each side. Now lets add rotation. Now we will rotate the body with the pull. Make sure you maintain golf posture.
For our “Pushing” exercise, grab the handle from the high position using both hands to get into position so that we do not put too much torque on the shoulder. Line the body up so we have 90 degrees between where the cable is and where the shoulder girdle is. With out any rotation, go ahead and press forward, allow the cable to come back. Perform 5-10 reps without rotation, and 5-10 with. Twisting the upper body, keeping the lower body stable. With the arm that is not pressing, reach and allow it to help you rotate.

Next is our lower body push exercise. We are going to perform a squat with one arm loaded. The cable is set up in the low position, hold on to the handle with one hand. Maintain athletic posture while reaching out with the opposite hand, keeping the arms parallel, abs engaged, one side of the body is loaded but we keep the weight evenly distributed, squat down while resisting rotation. Perform 5-10 reps on each side. Then perform 5-10 reps with rotation. As you come up, pull with one smooth movement. Keep the feet grounded and this should be one movement. If you can master this movement, it will definitely carry over into your golf swing, giving your more confidence, power and stability in your body and better reaction to the ground.
